Schuyler Colfax Jr. (March 23, 1823 – January 13, 1885) was an American journalist, businessman, and politician who served as the 17th Vice President of the United States from 1869 to 1873, and prior to that as the 25th Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1863 to 1869. Theodore Tilton (1835-1907) was an American newspaper editor, journalist, poet, and supporter of women's suffrage. He and his wife were parishioners of the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher and Tilton worked as his assistant for eleven years, until 1874, when Tilton sued Beecher for adultery with Mrs. Tilton. The case received widespread public attention.
